We are ecstatic to introduce you to our featured artist for Vol. 4 of Mabel’s Gone Painting- Oriana Poindexter!

As a San Diego based marine scientist, her work opens a dialogue about our relationship with the changing biodiversity of the ocean using traditional and alternative photo processes.
Oriana free-dives, photographs, and collects images and specimens from her immersions and experiences with the ocean’s inhabitants. The morphology of the specimens she collects, primarily seaweed, are recorded by light as they lay in contact with the photographic paper, creating life size portraits of their existence in the chemistry of photography. Over time, these combine to create a portrait of place, illustrated by these inhabitants of the environment themselves.
